Gold Coast Best Vegan Restaurants

With it’s multicultural dining scene and vast variety of food, the Gold Coast offers a little something for everyone.

The Vegan scene has exploded over the last 5 years, and not jus the run of the mill restaurants, a list of top quality establishments with a vast variety of cuisines.

Although not a vegan myself i do enjoy such restaurants, the wholesome meals have certainly benefitted me. And i have certainly enjoyed trying all these on the list

The Restaurants

Cardamon Pod

Taking Vegan food to new heights is the Cardamon Pod. Bright, energised and flavourome food, for someone who is non vegan my most visited cafe in the last few years was the Cardamon pod.

You must try the Indian Dosa, this homemade Dosa with spiced potatoes is to die for. Another favourite would be the vege big breakfast, I love the peanut fritters on here.

This cafe is also renowned for its elaborate range of acai bowls which taste amazing and are certainly insta worthy captures.

The Cardamon Pod is as popular as they come on the Gold Coast and with that said was also a worthy entrant in our Best Cafes guide.

Starting off as a market stall selling vegan raw desserts, one stall quickly became 2 within the first year. Fast forward and Blendlove opened up there own premises and still sticking with the fantastic raw desserts also expanded into a 100% plant based cafe.

Menu items consist of and a couple of our favourites are the corn fritters paired with avocado salsa and corn relish and the magic mushrooms with field mushrooms and Blendlove’s own kale and walnut mince top with vegan cashew aioli.

The raw desserts are ever changing and are sold individually or in packs with plenty of variety they boast vegan, gluten free, dairy free and free from any refined sugar and I can say are delicious.

I Like Ramen

They were right I do like ramen, and this vegan take is as good a bowl of Ramen that I have ever had. Known for being Australia’s first vegan Ramen restaurant.

The food here is as delicious as it is photogenic, flavours are through the roof and although im someone who does enjoy meat I certainly would not miss it here.

The kimchi ramen with  red miso spicy kimchi broth and the mapo tofu ramen with is a creamy broth, oat milk being the vegan alternative here are our two favourite ramens. Both slightly different, but packed with a punch of flavour.

The name suggest only one type of food here, well your wrong. Panko mushroom bao’s, and karage cauliflower add something different and believe me all the selection of bao’s are delicious.

Asahi on tap and a great selection of fine whiskies make this place a firm favourite hangout.

Izakaya Midori

I wont lie here, this is the only place I have never been to and I hate recommending somewhere I haven’t visited. However from multiple sources I have heard this is a cracking place for food.

One thing that struck me was that Izakaya Midori is tucked away in a back street in small suburb of Ready Creek. Making this a destination venue and not only does it take balls and confidence in what you do to open a destination restaurant. To go with a plant based Japanese restaurant the first of its kind in Queensland is impressive.

With such dishes like Tempeh and unami sushi, king mushroom ceviche and the Midori plant based ramen, they all look drool worthy and a place we can’t wait to try.

Greenhouse Canteen & Bar

Greenhouse Canteen has been a leading player in the Gold Coast Vegan scene since 2014. With its recycled timber fit out and sweeping views across water to Surfers paradise, veganism entered a new age.

The owners disappointed with the Vegan options on the Gold Coast decided to offer something new and something trendy. After moving premises to the suburb of Miami Greenhouse has never looked back.

With small plates such as Cauliflower Wings (Delicious) an mushroom and sage Arancini Balls make a perfect start.

To follow you cant go passed the Jackfruit Enchilada, full of flavour, and Jackfruit is not something if I’m honest i have enjoyed in the pass. But this was delicious. The Eggplant Moussaka is equally as good, tasty and hearty with that punch of flavour it needs.

Monday To Sundy 5pm to Late

Etsu Izakaya

Hidden away being the large white wooden doors is this hidden little gem, you’d say speakeasy as other than the music it is relatively unseen. Enter through the doors and through the tunnel shaped bar area and don’t forget to look up at the impressive half pipe (yes half pipe skate ramp) as a ceiling. And into the large dining area of share and private tables.

Modern Japanese food with a share plate theme. Sushi, raw bar, yakitori and robarta grill specials are a few specials but the ones we love are the homemade gyozas.

The bar at Etsu has a great selection of high quality Japanese whiskies and sake, along with classic and Japanese style cocktails.

Located in the suburb of Mermaid Beach close to other great eateries and bars.

Monday to Sunday 5pm to Late

Social Eating House

Class and sophistication is the key in this relaxed yet formal dining experience. The food is based around share plates with a variety of influences all over the world.

Musts would be the roast quail or the wagyu tartare from the small plates and slow cooked lamb shoulder in yoghurt or twice cooked pork belly in chilli and tamarind.

Wines are definitely the go at Social, with a great selection and staff that are clearly trained in what is paired correctly or not. With this said a cocktail list is impressive with a mix of classic and contemporary.

Edgewater Dining

Edgewater Dining located in the residential area of Isle of Capri just a stones throw from Surfer Paradise offers good quality contemporary dining, with probably the best backdrop on the Gold Coast.

Take a seat on the water front and at night a cascading view out down the river with the lights from the Surfers Paradise high rises in the background set a unbeievable scene.

The food and drink delivers to, more of a formal dining experience than the share plate theme the Gold Coast adopts. With a great selection of menu items like lemon pepper calamari and pork tacos to start and sticky pork belly and grass fed eye fillet for mains.

Another great option at Edgewater would be the afternoon we often wandered down enjoyed bread platters, cocktails and sensational river views.

Can Tho Kitchen

A little slice of Vietnam on the Gold Coast. Located a bit out of the city in the suburb of Runaway bay.

A once uninspired dining room was transformed and modernised a few years back and Can Tho has never looked back. The modernisation has really bought a sense of comfort and sleek look

The food has always been second to known, known for the homemade Vietnamese pancakes. With fresh and vibrant rice paper rolls and flavorsome bowls of Pho is not hard to see why Can Tho is a leading player in the Gold Coast food scene.

Located away from the center of town in the suburb of Mermaid Waters, Lucky Bao small a small yet trendy eatery, with a perfectly relaxed environment.

The menu is based on Asian share plates large and small and of course the highlights are the bao’s. There are no bad bao’s here however the Taiwanese fried chicken and the tempura soft shell crab are our favourites.

Other highlights include succulent Korean chicken wings and the bang bang chicken vermicelli salad.

If I’m honest there could of been double the amount on this list but I went for our top lot maybe soon a volume two will come out soon.

The Gold Coast really has become a city for foodies and drink experts alike. Some may say the new Melbourne and we believe it certainly isn’t far off competing with Australia’s food capital.

Whilst we have produced our best restaurants here stay tuned soon for a look at the best cheap eats, best markets and best vegan restaurants on the Gold Coast.

Best Cafes Gold Coast, Australia

Gold Coast Top Cafes

If there us one thing the Gold Coast has  an abundance of, its cafes and good ones at that. From the super hip suburbs of Mermaid Beach, Burleigh and Palm Beach. To the super busy tourist hub of Surfers Paradise, the Gold Coast just does it right and is home to the best breakfast.

With a city full of early risers, and summer sun rising at 4 am the cafes are often packed by 7am. Churning out delicious food and brewing top quality coffee this city just doesn’t disappoint.

After 12 years of living in this city we tried a few and a fair have lasted the distance, so with that here in no particular order are our select best.

The Cafes

Darrk Espresso

On the northern end of the Gold Coast lies Daark Espresso. Set in your typical Queenslander building, Daark has grown from a tiny 6 table boutique coffee shop to a newly refurb establishment which has doubled in size. With the luxury of now dining in or out on the decking looking out at the morning sun.

The food speaks for itself, with popular choices being Persian feta, cherry tomato and crushed avocado toast to more elaborate specials like southern fried chicken benedict.

Coffee is known as one of the best around with single origin options available.

Elk Espresso

Like Daark, Elk Espresso started life in the suburb Of Broadbeach in a small building resembling a house, which if to be honest we liked the homely feel. But has since moved into bigger premises right on the end of the Oasis Center in the center of Broadbeach. Only a stones through from the beach has made this ever popular cafe even better.

A favourite of my mine here would be the breakfast burger with the added option of jalapeños to kick-start that morning, certainly one of my best breakfast choices.

Elk is known for there goodness bowls. Bowls pack with greens, poached eggs and homemade lebnah. Offering a healthy start to any morning.

Musts are truffled scrambled eggs and the slow cook brisket. Brisket for breakfast you may ask yes, when its paired with homemade corn bread, salsa and jalepeno hollandaise

Commune

Another one of the original occupiers of the trendy Gold Coast Café scene is Commune. Another Queenlander style building. The feeling of home oozes out of Commune and the garden with its mismatched furniture certainly emphasizes that.

Commune was somewhere I liked to keep it simple and have bacon and eggs. The homemade relish that accompanied them was always delicious, and if you ask for soft poached eggs always perfectly cooked. When done right simple is sometimes the best way.

Paddock Bakery

Again and continuing the recurring theme of cafes in Queenslander houses lies Paddock Bakery. Set amongst houses in the backstreets of the suburb of Burleigh Heads. Rugged outdoor furniture and hipster feel another candidate for a cafe with the ultimate cosy and homely feel.

At Paddock bakery you must try the bagels, a little slice of NYC on the Gold Coast. Another favourite of ours would be the forest mushrooms on toast, earthy and delicious.

Paddock Bakery

Insight

Paddock Bakery a small cafe / bakery that can boast a number just shy of 90,000 Instagram followers must be doing something right in the ever popular Gold Coast food scene.

A converted Queenslander building in a quiet back street in the suburb of Burleigh Heads, offers a perfect relaxed and homely feel. Built up from a derelict and overgrown site gives a great back story.

Location

Paddock Bakery is located in the suburb of Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast, tucked away just off the Gold Coast Highway, 5 min drive from the center of Burleigh Heads.

The Food

A wide selection of food graces the Paddock menu with some favourites being the choice of bagels with smoked salmon and herb cream cheese or an open faced benedict bagel with choice of bagel, salmon or haoumi.

After something a little different, then this twist on toad in the hole. Mini sourdough scotch loaves filled with fried eggs, bacon, avocado mash and chili sambal, we add chorizo for extra flavour.

Paddock really test the boundaries and my weakness to sweet things with a doughnut French Toast (yes you heard that right) cinnamon doughnut, filled with salted caramel and topped with spiced poached apple, chocolate and walnut crumble finished with vanilla bean ice cream.
