The Red Bank Restaurant, Carrick On Shannon

Exploring Leitrim

We have been exploring a look around the County Leitrim area recently and spent a lot of time around Carrick Shannon. We heard great things about the restaurant The Red Bank so we decided to check it out one sunny evening

Pre drinks

We had a nice sunny day so we decided to check out Gings Bar which has it’s own beer garden with views out onto the river shannon.

Pre drinks

A more traditional choice of bar would be either the Oarsman on the main street or Flynns bar also on the main street the later has great live music in the evenings.

The Red Bank Restaurant

The Red Bank Restaurant was opened in 2020 and after a couple of tough years during the pandemic it is now able to show off its talents and flourish.

Outside the restaurant

The Menu

The menu at The Red Bank is full of choice, with seafood, steaks, burgers and and a few different choices. Started range from a wing menu, chowder, local goats cheese to name a few.

Most impressively was the vegan menu with a choice of 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 desserts. Its not often you see that in fact you lucky to find 1 of each in many places, they should be commended here.

Our choices

To get a great feel for the food we opted for both menus one off the normal menu and one off the Vegan.

Firstly off the main menu we chose the Buffalo wings which were delicious. Crispy wings not to saucy, could of kept eating and eating them

For main the Andarl Farm Pork Fillet with herb crust, black pudding, apple, potato fondant a d re wine jus stood out. And when it came out an A+ for presentation and the taste didn’t disappoint either.

Note : Andarl Farm is home to Velvet Pork, based in County Mayo great to see local produce being used and so well advertised.

The Vegan menu as mentioned sounded delicious we opted for first course seared Tofu marinaded in lemon and herb and served with charred baby gem and pea and mint dressing. This dish was a highlight so fresh and moreish would recommend either to a meat eater.

For main the the homemade burger of beetroot and mushroom with pickled red cabbage, beetroot ketchup, rocket and sweet potato fries. The dish I must say was so tasty and again would recommend to anyone. The flavours were perfectly balanced.

Lovely Leitrim

As mentioned at the top we have had some great trips and have enjoyed exploring the sights of Leitrim. Lough Rynn Castle is certainly a must with it’s walled gardens and lush grounds and further north in the county would be Glencar Waterfalll and the stunning views over Glencar lough.

Honestly Farm Kitchen, Carrick on Shannon

New Opening

There’s a new kid on the block in Honestly Farm Kitchen in Carrick on Shannon has opened its doors. A organic cafe and farm shop with drive through, known to be Irelands first organic drive through.

Its honestly organic food

Honestly opened in Carrick on Shannon early 2022 from the producers of Drumanilra organic farm a family farm from Boyle Roscommon. Drumanilra used to have its shop and cafe in the heart of Boyle Town but moved to these new and improved premises on the old KFC site.

Honestly aims to use its own produce with local suppliers to bring the best and freshest food to the table so to speak.

What the owners say

There statement on there website reads.

Our Honestly Farm Kitchen in Carrick on Shannon serves food sourced from our own organic farm, (Drumanilra Farm just 15 km away on the shores of Lough Key) and from like-minded producers.  We serve breakfasts, burgers, salads, sandwiches, freshly baked desserts and locally roasted coffee. We use local, sustainable and organic ingredients wherever possible.

Our Visit

This venue looks sleak and clean very functional with plenty of space no sitting on top of one another. There is no table service which is fine, it’s order at the counter the menus are displayed above, along with printed kids menus also which double up as drawing sheets with pictures to colour in.

I made two visits so far both times sampling the homemade burgers. Firstly I opted for the Deluxe Dexter burger and second visit I tried the Buttermilk chicken burger with buffalo and blue cheese.

The food at Honestly

The Dexter was juicy and tasted great. Dexter is a great Irish grade of beef with fantastic marbling which gives it is great flavour and tender beef. The burger is accompanied with free range bacon, Irish cheese, caramelised onions, brioche bun and the Honestly burger sauce.

Buttermilk Chicken Burger

The buttermilk chicken burger was a great piece of organic chicken beautifully coated and crispy, with generous spicy buffalo sauce and blue cheese very simply done done but packed full of punch and flavour.

On the side

The sides we have tried are the fries, sweet potato fries and the sweet and sticky wings. Both the fries were hand cut which is all the better and the chicken wings were tasty not too saucy and feel of the bone.

Sweet and sticky wings

Something different

My wife tried the Tofu burger the first time and probably the biggest compliment was she went back for it again the second time. The kids both had sausage on a stick with sweet potato fries and again the quality of the meat in the sausage was delicious, not fatty or greasy just quality, just what I want my kids eating.

Drive through

A first and very rare sight to have a drive through for a cafe / restaurant is a plus for the business and certainly for those in a rush or like ourselves with kids the ease of it all makes me want to use the business even more, to which i have regularly for coffees the ease of it is great.

Farm Shop

Inside the building in the left corner of the shop is a farm shop selling Drumanilra produce of veg and fruit, baked goods, organic pantry goods and much more. A great idea and with the owners of the premises owing the farm you just know the produce will be first draw.

More Carrick on Shannon

More Eats

Carrick is a great bustling town and is a bit of a food and drink destination with another one of our favourite places to go The Oarsman in the heart of the centre of Carrick. More a finer dining approach with some of the best food in the county. you can check out our Oarsman review Here.

Best to do

With all the eating a bit of exploring is needed and no better place to visit would be Lough Rynn Castle. With walks around the grounds and walled gardens a must and even step inside and see the history of this great castle.

Signal Bar Restaurant Clifden Review

The Signal bar restaurant Clifden is part of the Clifden Staion House Hotel and is quaintly located in the the Old station masters building and still respects the history of this once steam train station.

The building still has old all the old station signs and memorabilia inside and out.for any train enthusiasts there is also a museum of the old train station across the courtyard.

Inside the building they have kept the keeping of the history alive also with the history of the building running throughout the restaurant. A very modern and sleek industrial feel.

The hotel does have a restaurant side and menu but we opted for the bar food.

The Drinks

The Signal Bar restaurant Clifden has an impressive list of tap beers with international and crafts available . Opting myself to sample the Morretti beer which was a great choice. A fine wine list was available with ample options to choose from, we chose the a bottle of Tempranillo. Opened at the table and we were allowed to taste. A great wine nice and light, smooth and easy drinking.

The Food

Looking through the menu there where plenty of bar classics and was delighted to see with Clifden”s prominent coastal location plenty of seafood options including mussels, scallops and locally caught line fish to name a few.

For starters we opted for the tomato and haloumi brushetta. Generous in size and very tasty, accompanying salad was great and wife’s words one of the best tabbouleh I have ever had. Very well seasoned and packed with flavour.

For mains it was two opposites why I opted for the handmade burger, Michelle went with the Vegan Ragout.

The burger was delicious nice and juicy and very flavoursome beef, with all the trimmings inside, accompanied with a nice salad and chips. Can certainly say I was full after.

As for the Vegan ragout it was full of flavour, with lots of delicious herbs and spices.

Situated as part of the Station House Hotel and only 2 minutes walk from the town centre of Clifden.

The Oarsman Carrick On Shannon is known around the Leitrim and beyond for its outstanding food. Award winning restaurant who are passionate about sourcing from the source, from as local as possible bringing the best artisan ingredients.

The restaurant has won coveted awards like Georgina Campbell’s Ireland Guide Best Pub with Food, National Hospitality Awards Best Pub Food & Waterways Ireland Hospitality Award.  The Oarsman is one of only19 dining pubs in Ireland to be included in The Michelin Guide to Eating out in Pubs.

They have taken the pandemic head on and have not lied down, implementing a click and collect service and a deli shop during the day selling a selection of foods and take away snacks and all to the Oarsman standard as they know how.

Located in the heart of Carrick on Shannon in County Leitrim, 10 minutes from Boyle and 30 minutes from Sligo.

The Food

The food at the the Oarsman differs from lunch to dinner at lunch gourmet sandwiches, juicy burgers and wraps. A favourite selection of ours is the Andarl Farm pulled pork burger juicy, succulent and packed with flavour. Even more impressive is the homemade brioche bun soft, springy and perfectly buttery.

The Oarsman Burger

The evenings at Oarsman certainly have a fancier feel with upmarket fine dining, with fancier food and artistic presentation. A firm favourite of ours was the pressed and slow cooked pork belly the respect given to the pork is certainly been shown. slow cooked, flavoursome and melt in the mouth.

Delicious Pork Belly

Chicken wings at the Oarsman are also a hit although maybe not known for being a fine dining dish the flavour pumped into the wings and the blue cheese sauce are so tasty and like any good wing very moreish.

The food at Little Bao is just to doe for, based on relaxed dining the menu consists of share plates and the obvious there trademark baos.

Those not familiar with Bao buns, they are a steamed yeast bun soft in texture which can be filled with your own fillings. Popular in Chinese cuisines but now ever popular in all types of Asian cuisines.

From the share plates menu such dishes like ‘Lu Rou’ a Taiwanese version of a scotched egg or equally as inviting is the short rib dumplings. Both packed full of flavour and so Moreish that the share plate name would suitably be eaten alone.

Then there are the trademark baos. The buns so beautiful steamed, with the fillings expertly crafted to allow an array of textures. Personal favourites include fried chicken with black vinegar glaze and szechaun pepper mayo. Or equally as good and for the veges the Sloppy Chan a great mix of shitake tempeh, truffle mayo and pickled daikon. Disclaimer: They are delicious.

Although not a vegan myself I very much enjoy a wholesome meal and these plant based dishes certainly hit the spot.

People have been known to come from far and wide to sample these delights. So much so the shop has even added its own merchandise with beanies, t shirts and sweaters available for purchase.

The cafe is also a perfect location for when visiting the Glencar Waterfall with only a short 15 minute drive between them, although the waterfall is classed as being in Leitrim the borders are close.

Another great find for our collection of cafes around the world, its certainly one we think highly of and rate it a one of the top.
